Samuel Jay Hughes “Broomstick”, 83, of Otway, Ohio passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was born November 13, 1939 in Otway to the late Charles Ezra and Irene Smith Hughes.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Hoffer Hughes; sons, Anthony Hughes of Lucasville, Ohio, Brian Hughes of Otway and Barry Hughes of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Yamato Hughes, Taiyo Hughes and Amanda Charlton; great grandchildren, Ariel, Lyla, Noah and Aleah; and a brother, Sherman Hughes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles D Hughes, Denver Hughes and Richard Hughes; and sisters, Martha Adams and Annis Hughes.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, May 8, 2023 at Otway Cemetery with Junior Wiley officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 am at Botkin Hornback Funeral Home in Otway.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.
