Scioto County Commissioners say that Children Services is on the road to recovery after being hit by a storm of criticism following the death of baby Dylan Groves.
The state found that the agency mishandled the case and
removed Director Dr. Lorra Fuller.
Two new members were appointed recently to the Children Services Board, Sgt. John Howard from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Dr. Mikell Rase, a pediatrician at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Commissioner Bryan Davis said, “Having doctor on the board isn’t going to hurt at all.” He pointed out that, as a law enforcement officer, Sgt. Howard has already dealt with many of the issues the board faces.
Commissioner Cathy Coleman said the new board members were one of many positive changes at SCCS. “In spite of things that have been said recently we have been working on CS problems.” She said the Commissioners have searched for the perfect people to lead the agency. “With these last appointments and the measures that have been put in place. I want to make sure that it is known.”
Davis praised acting Director Lowell Howard for his hard work in turning the troubled agency around but added.
“I hope nobody misreads us and thinks that we’re satisfied with what’s happened to fix Children Services. We’re not satisfied. We’re pleased with what’s going on. We have a long way to go. “There’s a long road to recovery.”
