County sales tax revenue jumps

Sales tax revenue for Scioto County in November of 2019 took a big jump when compared with the same period back in 2018. More than $50,000 dollars more than was collected in November of 2018.

The numbers came to light at Thursday’s County Commissioners meeting. In November of 2019, the revenue was $621,944.27. That’s up $54,273.40 over November of 2018.

The total county sales tax rate is 7.25%, consisting of 5.75% Ohio state sales tax and 1.50% local tax.

The $621,944.27 number refers to the revenue generated by the local tax.

The numbers are good news for the county, which has been struggling to make up for the loss of the MCO sales tax, which added around $2 million per year to county sales tax receipts

.Though no reasons were given for the increase, Portsmouth has experienced an increase in tourism and a generally better overall economy recently.

Final sales tax numbers for 2019 are not yet available.
