Neighbors were shaken awake around 2 a.m. as gunfire erupted in the area of Eck Court and Edgewood Drive, sending 911 lines into overdrive with frantic calls.
When Portsmouth Police arrived at the chaotic scene, they detained a man who had an active warrant from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office. But that wasn’t the only crime in progress—officers also discovered that a safe had been broken into at a home on Orizaba Road, with debris from the safe littered across the street.
As officers searched for shell casings, they found a weapon abandoned near Christ Community Church at 25th and Thomas. The firearm was impounded for safekeeping as part of the investigation.
So far, police haven’t identified a suspect or the vehicle allegedly involved in the shooting, and the case remains under investigation.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HEAR GUNFIRE
STAY CALM BUT ACT FAST – Your quick reaction could save your life. Don’t freeze—move to safety immediately.
GET LOW & FIND COVER – Stray bullets don’t discriminate! Drop to the ground and get behind something solid like a concrete wall, vehicle engine block, or sturdy building.
LOCK UP & TURN OFF LIGHTS – If you’re at home, lock doors and windows and stay away from windows to avoid stray rounds.
CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY – Provide clear details: Where did the shots come from? How many? Did you see anyone fleeing?
DON’T PLAY DETECTIVE – Resist the urge to go outside and check things out. You could walk into a dangerous situation.
REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY – If you see suspicious vehicles or people running from the area, take mental notes or discreetly record details for police.
FINAL WORD
