Sleeping on the Streets
Portsmouth Police Officers spent the weekend dealing with multiple complaints related to homeless people.
Just before 8 am on Friday, officers responded to a report of someone lying on the steps of the Portsmouth Area Jaycees on Gallia Street. When police responded to the scene, they discovered that the man was not injured. Instead, he had been sleeping on the steps.
About half an hour later, the Scioto County Cancer Center reported a homeless woman sitting in the doorway of the building who refused to leave.
Officers served the woman with a no-trespass form and told employees to call them if the woman came back.
AT 11:30 am, a caller reported a man sitting on the sidewalk in the 2400 block of the Scioto Trail. When officers spoke to the man, he said he was having trouble with his feet. They gave him a ride down the street to King’s Daughters’ Medical Center. However, he did not wish to seek medical attention and left the area.
Around 10 pm, witnesses reported a woman lying face down on the ground at Grant Street and Park Avenue. Officers took the woman into custody for disorderly conduct, escape, and probation violation. This was her 16th arrest.
Forty-five minutes later, police responded to a report of a woman passed out near the State Electric Supply Company. Police discovered she had an open warrant through the Scioto County Sherriff’s Office and took her into custody.
Shortly after that, an officer heard a woman yelling near the Grant Bridge. When police arrived at the scene, the woman gave them false information about her identity. Police were able to determine who she was and arrested her for probation violation, possessing drug abuse instruments, and falsification.
Around 9 am on Sunday, Enterprise Rent a Car reported a man sleeping in the back of some trucks on the lot. Officers issued a no-trespass order and told him to move along.
Around 10 pm, a Hutchins Street caller contacted police to complain about a man hanging around his trash can. Police spoke to the man, who was digging through the trash. They advised him not to leave a mess and to stay off people’s property.
A McDonald’s customer spotted a man walking inside the fence at Livingston & Co just after 10 pm. Police spoke to a homeless man in the alley who said he was just trying to find a safe spot to sleep.
A Garfield Avenue caller contacted officers just before 1 am to report a homeless man kept digging through his trash and coming onto his property. An officer spoke with the homeless man and advised him to stay off the property.
