Thieves Hit Goodwill Again

Thieves targeted the Goodwill on Robinson Avenue once again but that’s not the only thing crooks helped themselves to. We break down the highlights of the Portsmouth Police crime log.

Breaking Into Goodwill

In what’s becoming a nightly event, the Goodwill on Robinson Avenue was once again hit by thieves. Just before 2 am, a caller reported 4 people attempting to break into the lot.

The caller said two of the people she saw trying to get into the lot, took off on bikes before the police arrived.

Taking A Beating

A Charles Street caller reported a man beating his head on her car and also on her back door just before 3 am. She said the man is her ex-boyfriend. Though her car is damaged, she didn’t want to file a report. The woman said the behavior has been going to for about a month.

She declined to file a report. Police advised her on the procedure for a protective order.

The man returned to the home at 3:46 am. It appears he has mental health issues. Officers arranged for his mom to take him to the emergency room.

Life In Danger?

A caller from the Shawnee Counseling Center reported a woman knocking on the door and asking for police assistance. She claimed someone was going to kill her. The woman had previously called 911 because she was locked out of her apartment building.

Police transported her to her home at Hudson House.

Suspicious Activity

  • A caller reported 3 men checking car handles in the 1900 block of Robinson. Police could not locate the suspects.
  • Offers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on 4th Street just before 9 pm. The caller said the truck has been running for over an hour. Police spoke with a homeless woman who lived in the car. She said she was fine. Officers had contacted adult protective services on her behalf previously and said they would do it again.


    Under The Influence

    • A High Street Caller reported a man lying in the alley “tweaking” on something just before 11 am. The man told police he felt fine. Officers told him to go home.
    • Police responded to a report of a shirtless, apparently high man walking in the turn lane in front of Wendy’s on Gallia. Officers could not locate him.
    • A worried son told police that his drug-using mother is threatening suicide just before 2 pm. She told police she didn’t want to hurt herself and refused medical attention.
    • Officers answered a call about a man lying on the ground near the Central Church of Christ at 3:42 pm. Police could not locate him.
    • Police responded to a possible overdose on Summit Street just before 8 pm.
    • At 11:10 pm, police answered a call for a woman with possible symptoms of alcohol poisoning on 7th Street. She did not need to go to the hospital.

    Fake Unemployment Claim

    A Seneca Drive caller reported a case of fraud just after 11 am. She said she received a letter from the unemployment office about a claim she didn’t file. The claim contained her personal information and Social Security Number. She is retired and didn’t file any claim. The claim used an unknown phone number and email address.

    Catch and Release

    Police discovered a guy they stopped for a traffic violation on Grant Street at 11:30 am has an active warrant. But the jail isn’t taking inmates du to COVID-19. Police issued a summons and told him to leave the vehicle parked until a licensed driver can pick it up.

    Kittens in Junker

    Officers checking out an abandoned vehicle on Kentland made an adorable discovery. The vehicle had a missing driver side door and busted windows. It is blocking a resident’s garage.

    They discovered a family of kittens living inside the truck. The officer attached a 7-day notice that the vehicle will be towed.


    Hey, That’s My Stuff

    • A 17th Avenue caller reported a vehicle broken into and medicine stolen just before 1:30 pm.
    • Two hours later, Kendall Avenue Man reported his lime-green bike stolen at 3:19 pm. Officers were unable to locate the man to take a report.
    •  At the same time, a Wayne Avenue man reported his wallet missing from his apartment  Police were also unable to locate him.
    • A 17th Street man called police to report his boyfriend was stealing from him at 3:43 pm.

    Life In Danger?

    Police responded to Mac A Doos on the Scioto Trail at 5:21 pm. A man told people there someone was following him and his life was in danger.

    Officers took him into custody and then took him to the Players Club on 17th.

    Bad Neighbors

    A 5th Street man called police just before 8 pm to report neighbors were bothering his stepson. They parked a U Haul in the street and would not let him leave.

    The neighbors told police they were moving to get away from the caller. They worried the residents of his home might break in and harm them. Officers stood by while they moved and said they would have some extra patrols in the area.
