What calls keep Portsmouth Police busy? Officers responded to 20,752 calls in 2024. We’ve got some interesting numbers on what types of incidents officers were called out for. And the top issue may not be what you think it is.
At the top of the call list is responding to alarms. Portsmouth officers responded to 1,667 alarms. That includes commercial, residential, hold-up, and other alarms.
Just below that are 1,664 calls regarding a suspicious person.
General reports of disturbances accounted for 1,300 calls. That includes everything from fights to domestics to people playing music too loud.
Police investigated 899 thefts, including 84 car thefts and 133 shoplifting incidents.
Officers checked into reports of a suspicious vehicle on 437 occasions
Officers fielded 403 domestic calls, 9 of which involved weapons
Breaking and Entering/Burglary/Open doors and Windows – 223 calls
Animal calls, including barking dogs, dog bites, loose dogs, and animal neglect calls, accounted for 210 calls.
Police were called in 174 times to assist with lifting patients.
Portsmouth Officers responded to 139 overdose calls.
Police searched for 108 juvenile runaways.
Police investigated 71 calls about fights, 6 of which involved weapons.
Officers investigated 66 reports of someone with a weapon – 48 calls for guns and 18 for knives.
Attempted Suicide – 56 Calls
Officers investigated 36 rapes and sex offenses.
Police were called on 13 occasions to investigate robberies and also for 13 reports of a shooting.
Police made 1,470 traffic stops and responded to 723 crashes. They issued 1,194 moving violations and 270 parking violations. The city impound lot brought in a net revenue of $154,967
