Portsmouth police handled two animal-related complaints, including concerns about cats and kittens at one apartment complex and a barking dog being watched for someone in rehab.
Police were first called to Harding Avenue after a woman asked to report possible animal neglect involving cats and kittens.
The city’s animal control officer was not available that day, so officers said they would contact the health department about helping catch the animals and possibly getting them rescued.
In a follow-up, police spoke with the health department, which planned to assign someone to help collect the kittens and cats from the complex within the next day or two.
Officers also responded to May Street after a caller reported a dog locked in a cage and barking constantly.
When police checked the situation, they learned the resident is in a wheelchair and was unable to bring the dog inside herself.
According to the report, the woman was watching the dog for her child, who is currently in rehab. The report said the child comes on day passes to care for the dog.
Police advised the resident that animal control would be notified about the complaint.
No citations or arrests were reported in either case.
