Deputies responded to State Route 823 after a man called 911, talked rapidly, and claimed someone had driven by shooting at him.
The call came in around 11:30 a.m.
The man said he was in a red car and was armed. A short time later, he told dispatchers someone was in his trunk trying to kill him.
Deputies located the man on U.S. 52 eastbound near the State Route 823 ramp.
According to the log, the man did have a gun in his waistband and allowed a deputy to take it.
Deputies also checked the man’s vehicle on State Route 823 and documented the firearm.
Another caller told dispatchers he had stopped to see if the man needed help because the red car was partly in the roadway near the Wheelersburg exit. The caller said the man had a gun on his side and grabbed it when asked if he needed help.
The caller said the man was acting “a little off.”
The man later called 911 again while on the way to the hospital, saying he was afraid he was going to be shot there.
Dispatch stayed on the line with him while a deputy followed to make sure everything was okay.
No arrest was listed in the information provided.
The call shows how quickly a welfare check can become a safety concern when someone appears confused, frightened, and armed. In this case, deputies got control of the gun, checked the vehicle, and followed the man toward medical help.
