Police say a broad daylight disturbance on Gay Street had all the makings of a crime drama—complete with a van break-in, armed suspects, and a dispute that may have been about far more than $50.
Officers were first called to the Marathon lot for a vehicle break-in. Minutes later, another report came in about a white van abandoned nearby after a man bailed out and fled on foot.
When police tracked down the van’s driver, he claimed his vehicle had run out of gas. He said two men he knew suddenly jumped in, tried to steal the van at gunpoint, and took off in a white Ford F-150.
But when officers spoke to the F-150’s driver and passenger, they said they had actually stayed on the scene to witness the attempted break-in at the Marathon lot.
The van driver told officers the dispute was about a $50 debt. Based on their experience, however, police said it was much more likely tied to drugs.
The investigation is ongoing.
