Carla Sue “Nanny” Carter, 70, of New Boston, died Sunday, September 27, 2026 at SOMC Hospice with her family by her side. She was born April 15, 1956 in Portsmouth, to the late Carl Hamilton and Wilma Sparks Hamilton of New Boston.
“Nanny” as she was known by most, was an avid quilter, belonging to both the Crestview Quilt Club and the Lucasville Quilters Club, she loved to sing, especially in church, where she attended the North Moreland Christian Baptist Church for decades. She was a graduated of Glenwood High School, class of 1974.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Carter, and a brother, Carl Hamilton Jr., whom died in infancy.
Carla is survived by her three children, Scott Carter (Julie) of Minford, Jason Carter (Terra) of New Boston, and Lisa Conkel of Sciotoville, two brothers, Kevin Hamilton (Kristina) of Winston Salem, N.C., and Bill Hamilton (Mindy Nolen) of Columbus, four sisters, Drema Petty (Wade) of Conway, S.C., Debbie Spencer of New Boston, Tamie Raike (Donnie) of New Boston, and Melissa Ruark (Phil) of Franklin Furnace, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren whom she adored; Michael Carter (Tiffany), Tristan Visi (Brittany), Ethan Carter, Travis Carter, Jaycee Carter, Gabby Banfield, Jeremy Conkel (Bailey), Hayden Conkel, and Abby Sue Conkel, four great-grandchildren, Calliope carter, Zyler Carter, Jacktan Visi, and Tatum Visi. She also leaves behind her dog Toby that meant so much to her.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with Pastor Phil Ruark officiating. Burial will follow at South Webster Cemetery. A visitation for friends and family will be on Tuesday, starting at 11:00 AM until the hour of service.
