Kids left alone while adults fight, a toddler in the street, and a child used to collect drug money… PPD officers responded to multiple reports of kids in danger and an overdose at a popular pizza place. We break down the highlights in the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Disturbing Behavior
Just after midnight, a woman reported screaming coming from a home on the Scioto Trail. Three units responded to the scene and took a man into custody.
Under The Influence
- At 2 am, officers responded to a report of a woman lying in the lot of Coffee at the Lofts. Officers were unable to locate her.
- A few minutes later, police answered an overdose report in the parking lot of Community Action.
- At 2:33 am, a caller reported that a pair that previously overdosed were now in the lobby of the Shawnee Apartments. He asked police to remove them. Officers dropped them off near the Post Office.
- Police responded to a report of an overdose on Highland Avenue just before 2 pm. There was a warrant for the man’s arrest but the Scioto County Jail would not accept him. An ambulance transported the man to SOMC for evaluation.
- At 5:57 pm, an 11th Street caller reported a woman overdosing on the floor of the bathroom at Gatti’s Pizza. The woman was attempting to leave when the police arrived. Officers took her into custody.
- Police assisted Portsmouth Ambulance with an apparently high uncooperative patient at 8:15 pm.
- At 10:22 pm, officers responded to another OD in a bathroom, this time on Argonne Road. Police found the woman lying headfirst in a bathtub. PFD medics administered Narcan. The woman refused medical treatment.
- Portsmouth Police assisted New Boston Officers for a report of a drunken stepfather getting aggressive with his family just before midnight.
Fake Five Dollar Bill
Officers responded to the Post Office for a report of a man attempting to pass a counterfeit bill. The bill was a pretty small denomination for fake money, only $5.
Police determined an elderly gentleman received the phony currency in change from somewhere else. He had plenty of money on him and paid the Post Office the $5. Officers impounded the fake bill.
Child Collecting Drug Money?
Just before 4 pm, police responded to a report of a kid riding up and down Grandview Avenue on a bike asking people for money for food.
The caller said the boy refused offers of food and only accepted money. The child then rode his bike over to two adults near the Hilltop Market and handed the money to them.
The caller worried the boy is being used to gather drug money for adults.
Police could not locate the child.
Toddler in Traffic
At 4:20 pm, a caller reported a toddler girl in traffic at Kinneys Lane and Waller. The caller said they nearly hit the child.
Police spoke to the family.
What’s That Smell?
A 14th Street neighbor complained of the smell of pot smoke coming from a neighbor’s apartment. Policed noted a very strong smell of marijuana.
They advised the man to be considerate of his neighbors but reported he was not happy with the advice.
Kids Left Alone
Just before 6 pm, a caller reported that two adults were fighting at a Robinson Avenue apartment all day long and had left children alone.
When police arrived on the scene, they found two small children in the apartments and the mom outside the apartment, apparently ready to leave. The male half of the couple had already left the scene.
Police warned the mom and contacted CPS.
PMHA Parking Crackdown
Officers continued their crackdown on illegal parking in Wayne Hills at 10:49 pm. They cited four vehicles for parking on the sidewalk.
Domestic Violence
At 11:46 pm, a woman reported a man beating a friend of hers at a Harding Avenue home. Officers took the man into custody.
Pit Bull Attack
A 13th Street woman reported a light brown pit bull attempted to attack a group of people. The dog was running loose. Police could not locate the animal.
