James Michael Barnett, 75, of Portsmouth, passed Saturday, May 30, 2026 at SOMC. He was born March 30, 1951 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Jimmy and Rhoda (Thornsberry) Barnett.
James was a dedicated member of several local organizations that reflected his commitment and interests throughout his life. He proudly belonged to Laborer’s Local #83, Portsmouth Moose #762, Moose Riders #762, and the New Boston Eagles. Alongside his community involvement, he was an avid fisherman, finding joy and solace in the quiet moments spent on the water.
James is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Jennings and Jacquelin “Jackie” Renee Barnett; nine grandchildren: Alyssa Nichole, Kyle Michael, Joshua, James Michael, III, Haley, Duece, Angelina, Breanna, and Jacob; three sisters, Thelma Slusher, Irene Slusher, Shirley Moore; two brothers, Dennis Barnett, and Ronnie Barnett. Throughout his life, he was a loyal friend and companion to his dog, Peanut, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Barnett, Jr.; two sisters, Glenna Slusher and Bertha Byrd; and one brother, Carl Barnett.
