Portsmouth Police tried to help a worried grandma locate her grandaughter after an alleged beating and shooting and faced a string of thefts. We’ll break down the highlights.
Who’s That Knocking?
Just before 2 am, an Offnere Street man called police and asked them to find out who was knocking on his door. He said no one should be there this time of night and he didn’t want to check it himself.
Police said the mysterious knocker was gone by the time they arrived.
Man Down
Just after 2 am, a Royce Street caller reported a man lying on the sidewalk with a flashlight. When police checked in with him, he said he was fine. He’d stepped off the sidewalk and twisted his ankle while walking home.
Shirtless On Gallia
Officers responded to a report of a shirtless man swinging a red hoodie and wandering into the street on Gallia just after 10 am. It turned out he was on probation and his probation officer wanted him arrested.
Officers took him into custody.
Car Break-In
A Harding Avenue caller told police someone got into his unlocked vehicle and helped themselves to a whole lot of tools including:
- Stihl Weedeater
- Stihl Blower
- Bosch drill
- Porter cable kitdrill
- Circular saws
- Jig Saw
- Multitool
The victim told police he’d get a complete list to them.
Lost And Found
Just before noon, officers received a report that a stolen vehicle had been located on Thomas Avenue and that the man who took it was trying to drive away in it.
It turned out the man was an ex-boyfriend of the vehicle’s owner. When she arrived on the scene, it turned out she didn’t have a key for the vehicle or money to have it towed.
A bigger problem was that she never officially reported the car stolen. Police were unable to locate the boyfriend.
Unsafe For Kids?
A man contacted police just after noon to report two children living in unsafe conditions. He said he was also worried that a sexual offender was staying in the house.
However, an officer said the kids seemed healthy and the living conditions looked fine.
Under the Influence
- Officers responded to 7th Street for a report of several people in a back yard shooting up drugs in their legs. Police arrested two of the individuals.
- At 3:17 pm, a caller reported a man passed out in a car at the stop sign at Grant and Franklin. Officers took him into custody for possessing drug abuse instruments and had the car towed.
- Officers responded to a report of a man passed out in a vehicle at the Four Keys Inn at 5:12 pm.
- At 5:16 pm, police responded to a report of an OD on High Street. The woman was alert by the time police arrived.
Worried Grandmother
A worried grandma contacted the police at 1:30 pm and asked them to check on her granddaughter. She said the woman got into a fight with her boyfriend the previous night.
Grandma said the boyfriend beat the woman up and then shot at her van.
When police spoke to the woman she had several abrasions on her face but she didn’t want to file a police report. She said she might leave the area to get away from the violent boyfriend. Police told her to check in with Grandma and let her know she was okay.
The same woman’s father contacted the police at 7:50 pm. He said his daughter’s boyfriend had beaten her and shot up her car. The family had still not heard from her. Police got no answer when they went to her home.
Can’t We All Just Get Along?
The Woodbine Apartments’ favorite feuding siblings were at it again just after 4 pm. The sister complained to police that her brother threw bleach on her. There were no injuries. Officers advised them to get along.
Hey! That’s My Stuff
- Just before 5 pm, a woman told police she thought she found her stolen bicycle at the 14th Street Community Center. A quick check of the bike’s serial number proved she was wrong.
- At 5:02 am, a 17th Street caller reported a stolen TV and Playstation. Officers took information for a report.
- The Kroger on Gay Street reported a man stealing from the liquor store at 5:12 pm. Police arrested him.
- A Kent Street Caller reported someone broke into her car and stole several items just before 6 pm. Police took information for a report.
- At 7:30 pm, officers received a report that 2 men broke into the vacuum cleaner at Splash and Go and stole change. The suspects were gone when officers arrived.
