Work-from-home trends are redefining rural Ohio, but the move is not progressing in the same way across all places. While in Scioto County, teleworkers continue to make up a negligible portion of the workforce, they have become a distinct group with unique requirements compared to regular commuter workers.
Why does this matter? Remote workers in the area can be paid salaries by firms operating far outside the Portsmouth, Lucasville, or Wheelersburg communities. These wages could be spent within the community for rent, food, child care, and other expenses.
It will not happen right away, but the figures suggest a gradual transformation that might affect the area in some way.
What the Scioto County Numbers Reflect
Approximately 6% of the Scioto County workforce were remote workers in 2024, while the same figure stood at around 12% in Ohio. Traveling alone accounted for 84% of workers, whereas carpooling came second at 7%. Remote work became the third most popular option despite the much smaller number than the statewide one.

This would include expanding broadband connectivity, helping residents get jobs through vocational programs, and creating networking opportunities for remote employees. By carefully planning these initiatives, Scioto could benefit from even a small remote workforce.
