Dogs need healthy snacks for a long and healthy life. But not all snacks are good for your pet. Here are 7 dog treats that are healthy options over the highly processed snacks.
1. Apple Slices
Apple slices provide essential vitamins and minerals and can be a great treat for your dog. Try a couple of slices each day with a chicken breast. You can make apple slices a meal by mixing in a cup of steamed veggies such as broccoli and cauliflower.
2. Turkey or Tuna, not Chicken Nuggets
Dogs love chicken nuggets but beware they have a high amount of fat, so it’s best to use them sparingly. Mix a slice of chicken with a piece of lean meat such as turkey or tuna. Try one or two slices of one of these a day.
3. Soft Treats
Many dog treats contain high amounts of fat. However, a healthy option would be a soft treat made from flaxseed, which is a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Laminex is another excellent, high-quality brand.
4. Whey
It’s important to give your dog healthy snacks and foods and a whey-based treat like Smart Balance or Farmarian Oat nuggets are both good options. As well as being a source of protein, they are high in calories with a good amount of vitamins and minerals. You can try one or two of these each day.
5. Barley Chips
If you’re not a fan of potato chips, try this healthier alternative. Barley chips are high in fiber, protein, and vitamin B6. Mix them with your dog’s food or top up a kibbles bowl.
6. Nut Butters
As well as tasting good, nut butter is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Nut butter such as almonds, cashew, and hazelnut are good choices. Mix one slice of peanut butter with a small portion of your dog’s food.
7. Avocados
Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to be good for dogs. Avocados are high in potassium, which is a good energy source for your dog, and your pet will get some of these minerals from dog food. You can have avocado in a dog treat by mixing slices in with your dog’s food. Note: Avocado pulp is not toxic to dogs, but other parts of the avocado can be harmful.
We all love to give our pets treats. Try some of these healthy options to keep your dog feeling healthy and happy.
