More than 2,300 years ago, Plato’s Republic described a just society governed by wisdom and virtue rather than wealth or power. While few would support his political model today, his work established the enduring question of how societies ought to function.
In 1516, Thomas More’s Utopia introduced the term “utopia” through the depiction of an imaginary island built on shared property, education and cooperation. Whether satire or serious proposal, it became a lasting symbol of humanity’s search for a better society.

Jeremy Griffith and Fix The World
Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith offers a different explanation for humanity’s longing for a better world. He argues that it reflects an intuitive awareness that our present psychological state is not our natural condition.
According to Griffith, the development of conscious thought created a conflict between human instincts and the conscious mind’s need to question and understand independently. He suggests this gave rise to the insecurity and defensiveness commonly known as the human condition. Griffith further argues that enduring stories such as the Garden of Eden, humanity’s “fall,” and the search for paradise symbolically reflect humanity’s attempt to understand this psychological conflict.
