An admitted wife-beater took himself directly to jail and officers spent another day dealing with the problems of a very troubled woman.  We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police crime log.

Unwanted Guests

Just before 4 am, a woman called PPD to report suspicious activity in her son’s Kendall Avenue apartment. She told dispatch her son is currently in jail. However, his neighbor texted her to report people in his apartment.

When officers arrived, they determined that people in the apartment were permitted to be present, with the exception of one man. He is on the barred list for PMHA, so officers told him to leave.

Dog Attack

A Bloom Street caller reported a dog attack at 7:24 am. The man said a black German Shepard attacked his car with his children inside.

He was worried since his wife would be home shortly. He told officers the dog was still around when he returned dropping off his kids.

Police were unable to locate the animal.

Under The Influence

A Mabert Road caller reported a man passed out or asleep in a vehicle and another man who was “whooping and hollering” just after 7:30 am. The caller said both were in the alley by a dumpster.  Police discovered a homeless man sleeping in his vehicles.

Officers responded to Vandervort Supply just before 10 am for a report of a found needle. Police destroyed the syringe.

Police responded to a report of an apparently high woman in yoga pants running around between the Burger King and Rally’s on Gallia just before 6:30 pm. Officers could not locate her.

Shooting Threats?

Just before 8 am, a Summit Street caller reported some disturbing threats. She claimed a neighbor yelled at her husband while he was taking their grandchild to school and said, “If you don’t shut up, I’m going to shoot you.”

The grandfather wasn’t sure which apartment the threat came from. The neighbor police spoke to denied yelling anything. No one was home in the other apartment.

Police advised the family to call back if there were more threats.

Beer Can Through the Window

A 7th Street caller reported a case of criminal damaging just before 8 pm. She said someone threw a beer can through the front window of her house.

The can shattered the window.

Towed Away

Police arranged for a vehicle parked on Young Street to be towed away at 9:30 am. They’d ticketed the vehicle for a 72-hour tow back on 2-5. It appeared the axle or shock is broken.

Police had two vehicles and a trailer towed from 7th Street at 10;38 pm.

Bank Fraud

A branch manager at Fifth Third contacted the police to report a case of check fraud. Someone deposited a $10,000 check and then withdrew money. It turned out the check was bad.

Lighter Fluid Attack

A Summit Street caller reported that a man broke in her door and threw lighter fluid on her bed before leaving the area.

Officers took information for a report just after 11 am.

  • At 8:42 pm, officers responded to Dollar General for a report of a pair of shoplifters inside the store on Harding Avenue. Police took information for a report.
  • Officers responded to Glover Street at 11:18 pm for a report of a car break-in. The suspect took a laptop and ran off towards the elementary school.  Police were unable to locate the man.

Suspicious Behavior.

Officers responded to a report of a man acting very strangely at 1:30 pm. The caller reported he was out by the Railroad Tracks near OSCO pointing at the sky and yelling. PPD located him near the dumpster by Bob and Floyd’s.

It turned out to be a man that police have almost daily contact with. They advised him to stay out of the road.

Changing Clothes In The Street

At 2 pm, police received a call to Gallia Street about a suspicious woman out in the street on Gallia. When they arrived on the scene, they came across a woman they have almost daily contact due to an extremely volatile relationship.  They stood by while she got her things from her significant other and left the scene.

An hour and 45 minutes later, police received a report of her acting up at the BP. However, she was gone when they arrived.

At 8:40 pm, a Robinson Avenue caller reported an apparently high woman changing clothes in the street. It turned out to be the same woman. The jail refused to take her. Police took her to a friend’s house to stay until someone else could pick her up.

Wifebeater Takes Self To Jail

A man turned up in the lobby of the Scioto County Jail just before 3 pm to turn himself in for beating his wife.

He told law enforcement the incident happened in a Farley Square apartment and his wife left with the child to go to another apartment. Officers said he appeared to be intoxicated.

Police went to check on the welfare of the wife and child. Officers read him his rights, took him to the police station to book, and brought him back to jail.
