It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Strickland on November 14, 2024. Known affectionately as Donnie, he was born on February 3, 1954, in Portsmouth, OH, and passed away at his home in Mc Dermott, OH.
Donnie was a beloved husband and friend of almost 20 years, Rhonda Strickland of McDermott, and a devoted father to his children Carrie Strickland (Michael Reis) of Portland, Oregon, Jodi Strickland Bates (Gene Borgemenke) of Cincinnati, OH, and Garrett Strickland of Minneapolis, MN. He was a cherished grandfather to four grandsons: Avery and Matt Schilling, Cameron and Reece Bates and step-grandfather to eleven: Mason Bodmer, Aidyn, Peyton, Ryder, Reagan, Braelyn, Brielle, and Saint Schackart, Jake Hiles, and Mason and Isaac Horner. Beloved brother of Dickie Strickland of Otway, Tim and Brenda Strickland of Lucasville, Kenny and Peggy Strickland of Lucasville, two sisters Angie (Mike) Smith of Mc Dermott, Penny (Sid) Staggs of West Portsmouth, brother in law Jeff Miller of Otway, three stepsons: Jimmy (Beth), Joey (Heather) and Jacob (Stacy) Schackart. Fourteen special nieces and nephews, twenty-one great nieces and nephews, father in law and mother in laws: Frank and Sandy Piatt and Ray and Dolores Miller.
Donnie was a hardworking cement finisher in the construction industry, dedicated to his craft and his colleagues in the union. He found solace in the outdoors, indulging in hunting and fishing, as well as collecting antiques and tending to his garden. A lover of bluegrass music, Donnie enjoyed attending festivals and playing the mandolin.
Preceding Donnie in death were his parents, Dick and Betty Strickland, cousin Monty Strickland, nephews: Sidney Lee Staggs and Jay Neff, sister in law Pam Knittel, brother in law Sean Miller.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the SOMC Cancer Center, Dr. Liu, and the compassionate staff at SOMC Hospice for their care and support during Donnie’s illness.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held in the summer of 2025, where family and friends will come together to honor Donnie’s beautiful life. Please check back for further details on the arrangements. May Donnie’s memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
