“I’m Going to Burn It Down” – Firefighters, Deputies Rush to Home After Threat

I'm going to burn it down

A frantic predawn call sent deputies and firefighters racing to a home after a mother reported her son had threatened to burn the house down—with himself still inside.

What they found when they arrived only made the situation stranger.

According to the report, the woman was staying at a hotel out of state when she received a series of alarming text messages from her adult son shortly before 5 a.m.

She also received photographs that appeared to show household items on fire inside the home.

Fearing the worst, she called 911.

Deputies and members of the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department responded expecting they might find an active house fire or someone trapped inside.

Instead, they found… nothing.

Investigators walked around the entire home and reported seeing no flames, no smoke, and no signs that a fire had occurred.

After firefighters arrived, investigators reviewed the photographs the woman had received and noticed something unusual.

Several of the images appeared to have been taken during daylight hours—even though the emergency call came in before sunrise.

“Nope.”

Deputies asked the woman to return to the home so they could sort out what had happened.

While officers waited outside, they repeatedly knocked on the door but received no response. They could hear dogs barking inside the garage area but saw no movement.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

The woman’s son stepped outside and shouted, “What’s going on out here?”

When deputies asked him to come outside and speak with them, he simply replied, “Nope,” slammed the door, and went back inside.

Family Says Stress Has Been Building

While deputies remained outside, the homeowner explained that the family had been under significant stress because of an ongoing divorce and other recent family disputes.

She told investigators she had taken her grandchildren and left to stay in a hotel after an argument with her son earlier in the day.

According to her statement, he later began sending messages saying he was going to burn the house down with himself inside.

She told deputies she was less concerned that he would intentionally hurt her than she was that he might harm himself or destroy the home.

Because there were no visible signs of a fire and no immediate legal authority to enter the residence, deputies consulted with investigators and determined they would forward the statements, photographs, and text messages to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The homeowner was asked to email screenshots of the messages and photographs to investigators as additional evidence.

Suicide Threats Should Always Be Taken Seriously

Mental health professionals urge families never to dismiss statements about suicide or threats to set fires, even if they later prove to be exaggerated or false alarms.

If someone threatens to harm themselves or destroy property:

  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Do not try to handle the situation alone.
  • Preserve text messages, photos, and voicemails as evidence.
  • Stay in contact with responding officers if it is safe to do so.
  • Encourage the person to seek emergency mental health treatment.

Even when no fire is ultimately found, threats involving suicide or arson often signal a person in crisis who may need immediate intervention.
