Two separate incidents in Scioto County this week highlight the dangers of loose dogs and escalating neighborhood disputes.
🐕 Woodland Avenue: Shotgun Threat After Cat Complaint
Portsmouth police were dispatched to Woodland Avenue after a resident reported a neighbor threatening him with a shotgun during an argument about his dogs running loose.
The caller said he had approached the homeowner about the animals allegedly killing neighborhood cats when the neighbor reached for what he thought was a shotgun. Fearing for his safety, the resident retreated and contacted police.
Officers spoke to the homeowner, who stated he only had a knife accessible at the time and that a shotgun owned by his girlfriend was currently in a pawn shop. Despite differing accounts, police arrested the man for assault and booked him into the Scioto County Jail. He has previous arrests for domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and criminal damaging.
Takeaway: Complaints about pets should ideally be handled through animal control or local authorities rather than confrontations, especially when tensions run high.
🐾 Minford: Cats Attacked by Neighboring Dogs
Scioto County sheriff’s deputies responded to a Minford residence after a caller reported that neighboring dogs had gotten loose and attacked her cat, causing serious injuries.
The dogs reportedly belonged to neighbors two doors down who have multiple animals that frequently escape. Deputies contacted the county dog warden, who planned a follow-up visit. The cat’s owners were advised to seek veterinary care and informed about their legal options.
