A woman with a history of erratic behavior was arrested for disorderly conduct on Sunday afternoon, following a series of disturbing outbursts that spanned two days.
On Friday, officers responded to a report of a woman acting “crazy” in front of Portsmouth Ambulance on Gallia Street. Police, who are familiar with the woman, recognized the bizarre behavior as typical for her, and after a brief encounter, allowed her to go on her way.
However, just two days later, on Sunday afternoon, police were once again called to Mound Street at 1:40 p.m. after reports of a woman yelling and screaming as she walked down the street. A few minutes later, another caller reported the woman had stripped naked, sitting on the top step of a residence and talking to herself.
When officers arrived, they attempted to speak with the woman, but she continued to refuse to comply and exposed herself as she ran down Grant Street. Police arrested her for disorderly conduct and booked her into the Scioto County Jail.
This wasn’t the first time officers have dealt with this woman’s erratic behavior. Earlier this year, she had been arrested multiple times for assault, criminal trespass, domestic violence, drug abuse, felonious assault, and even resisting arrest.
What You Should Know About Mental Health and Public Behavior:
- If You See Troubling Behavior, Act Fast: Alert authorities to ensure that those who are struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues receive help before the situation escalates.
- Responding to Crisis Situations: Individuals in distress may display unpredictable behavior that puts them and others at risk. Law enforcement is trained to handle these situations, but early intervention can prevent serious consequences.
- Community Resources: Portsmouth has mental health services and support networks for individuals in crisis. Ensuring access to counseling and treatment is essential in breaking harmful cycles of behavior.
While the woman’s actions over the weekend were troubling, it highlights the need for greater mental health support in our community.
