A trip through Kroger on a motorized cart ended at the Scioto County Jail after employees spotted a woman allegedly stuffing merchandise into a tote she had taken from the store shelves.
Portsmouth police were called to the store around 4 p.m. after an employee reported a woman in a gray hoodie and blue sweatpants loading items into the tote while riding through the store.
Officers detained Allison Matthews and quickly discovered she also had an active Scioto County warrant.
Police took Matthews into custody and booked her into the jail on a theft charge.
The homeless woman later appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court, where she was appointed a public defender and released on her own recognizance.
Her pretrial hearing is scheduled for November 10.
The case remains pending, and Matthews is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
