Who’s Watching The Kids? – Portsmouth Police Log 8/20

Officers responded to a report of kids riding bikes unsupervised at 1 am, threats of a shooting, and helped clear away junked cars on Thursday. We’ break down some highlights of the calls in these next 8 slides.

Threats Were Made

Thursday

At 1:16 am, a caller told police that four people were circling her in a car on Waller Street. She said they threatened to shoot her.

Both the caller and the vehicle had left by the time police arrived 11 minutes later.

Out After Dark

Thursday

Police answered a call to Kentland Avenue just after 2 am to check on the welfare of some children. A caller reported a man for not looking after his kids.

The caller claimed the dad was high and not taking care of the children. It was alleged they were out riding their bikes at night and were left alone for several hours during the night.

Police spoke to the kids at 2:42 am. They admitted they had been outside on their bikes within the hour and one of them was still awake. Police suggested daytime was a better time for bike riding.

Suspicious Activity

Thursday

  • Officers answered a report of a man passed out in a Malibu on Charles Street at 2:37 am. He told police he’d simply fallen asleep in his car in front of his house. He went inside.
  • Officers checked out a report of a white pickup parked near Spartan Stadium at 2:55 am. The occupants were sleeping in the truck waiting for the morning food giveaway.

False Alarm

Thursday

  • A panic alarm sounded on Charles Street just after 2:30 am. A resident accidentally set it off.
  • Just after 9 am, an alarm sounded at Holy Redeemer Church. The alarm company called to cancel.
  • A hold-up alarm at a local bank had officers on high alerts at 1:30 pm. Fortunately, it turned out that it was accidentally activated.
  • At 11 pm, an alarm sounded at Fred’s Pizza Express. When police checked it out, all was secure.

Friday

A motion alarm sounded at the Dollar General on Harding Avenue just after 2 am.  The building looked secure and a delivery driver sleeping in his semi said he didn’t see or hear anything.

Sleep Screaming

Thursday

Police responded to a report of a man screaming and pounding on the dumpster at the Sunset Bowling Lanes on 17th Street at 3:46 am.

The homeless man at the scene was all right. He told officers he’d been asleep and that he sometimes sleepwalks.

Police advised him to keep the noise down.

Meanwhile at Speedway

Thursday

Police responded to a report of a man harassing customers at the Speedway on Gallia just after 9 am. Officers discovered he had an active warrant through the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.

Junking Up The Place

Thursday

  • Officers responded to a complaint of two non-running minivans on Dr. James F. Scott Place just after 10 am. The caller said the vehicle doesn’t run, there are no tags, and grass and weeds are growing around both vehicles. One of the vehicles is on blocks. When police arrived, they found the owner cleaning up around the van. Officers advised her to take care of them and get them moved. They also noted that both vans had tags. The owner promised to take care of the issue.
  • AT 10:16 am,  police answered a call about a white Trailblazer parked in the same spot for several days. Officers marked it with a 72-hour warning.
  • Police checked out a complaint of a junker parked on Walnut Street at 11 am. A tow company moved the vehicle to the city garage.

Under The Influence

Thursday

  • A caller reported that the guy who normally sits between Burger King and Verizon on Gallia Street seemed to be in distress.  Just after noon, they reported he was slumped over and twitching.  He said he was okay and did not want help.
  • Police answered a report of an apparently high man at the Marathon on the Scioto Trail just after 3 pm.  Offices couldn’t find her when they arrived.
  • Officers assisted a man discovered lying on the ground in Alexandria Park just before 7 pm. A caller informed the police the man was on something. The patient asked to go to the hospital and an ambulance transported him.

Friday

Officers responded to an OD on Robinson Avenue just after 1 am. EMTs were able to revive the woman and transported her to SOMC.
