A deadly dog attack and a second complaint involving loose, aggressive dogs have renewed concerns about irresponsible pet ownership after two recent animal incidents left residents fearing someone could be seriously hurt next.
In one case, a family’s beloved Yorkshire Terrier was killed after a loose dog entered their yard. In another, a man reported being confronted by neighboring dogs that he says repeatedly roam onto his property.
Both incidents were investigated in Lawrence County.
Yorkshire Terrier Dies Protecting Family
Deputies responded after a homeowner reported that a loose brown dog had attacked her Yorkshire Terrier.
The dog’s owner told deputies the same animal had entered her yard earlier that morning and behaved aggressively toward her dogs, but she was able to chase it away.
A few hours later, she, her children, and her dogs were walking out of their garage when the loose dog returned.
According to the report, the dog immediately attacked the family’s Yorkshire Terrier.
The owner tried to separate the animals, but the attack proved fatal.
Deputies noted the loose dog remained in the area even after they arrived.
Neighbors told investigators they did not know who owned the dog and said it had only appeared in the neighborhood that morning.
The Lawrence County Dog Warden responded and safely captured the animal.
As the dog was being loaded for transport, a woman arrived and identified its owner.
Deputies later issued the owner a summons to appear in court on allegations involving a dangerous or vicious dog after another dog was killed.
Neighbor Says Loose Dogs Keep Charging Him
In a separate incident, another resident reported that neighboring dogs again came onto his property while he was walking his own dog.
The man told deputies the dogs attempted to attack him and his pet before their owners came outside and regained control.
According to the report, he told the owners it was at least the third time the dogs had run loose and confronted him.
The resident requested the incident be documented in case the situation continues or someone is eventually injured.
Ohio’s Avery’s Law Increased Penalties
Ohio strengthened its dangerous dog laws through Avery’s Law, named after a young child who was killed in a dog attack.
The law increased penalties for owners whose dogs seriously injure or kill people and expanded requirements for owners of dangerous dogs. Depending on the circumstances, owners may face criminal charges, court-ordered restrictions, mandatory insurance requirements, and the possibility that a dog could be declared dangerous or vicious.
While Avery’s Law primarily focuses on attacks involving people, Ohio law also provides penalties when dogs kill or seriously injure other domestic animals. Owners who repeatedly allow aggressive dogs to roam may face citations, civil liability for damages, and additional legal consequences if attacks continue.
Don’t Ignore a Loose Dog Problem
Animal experts say repeated reports of loose or aggressive dogs should never be ignored.
If a dog repeatedly escapes its property, growls, chases people, attacks other animals, or behaves aggressively, neighbors should report the incidents before someone is seriously injured.
Dog owners can reduce the risk by:
- Keeping fences and gates secure.
- Never allowing dogs to roam unattended.
- Repairing broken tie-outs or enclosures.
- Socializing and training dogs early.
- Taking complaints from neighbors seriously instead of dismissing them.
Many serious dog attacks are preceded by earlier reports of roaming or aggressive behavior. Addressing those warning signs early can prevent tragedy for both people and pets.
