Herbert Wesley Shear, 89, of Piketon, Ohio passed away November 22, 2025 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was born November 7, 1936 in Jackson County, Ohio to the late Harold Wesley and Pauline Jayne Shear.
On December 28, 1957 he was united in marriage to Marie Jenkins Shear who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Vicki (Ed) Alley of Piketon; a son, Chris (Lisa) Shear of Stockdale; grandchildren, Tara (Dwayne) Raines of Inez, Kentucky, Wesley (Sabrina) Shear of Piketon, Luke (Mattie) Shear of Piketon, Autumn Shear of Waverly, Justin (Dedra Hensley) Ferguson, Cortney Spencer, Tori Canter and Jacob Canter of Waverly; 17 great- grandchildren; a sister, Norma Colanere of Bexley, Ohio; and a brother, Roy Lee (Helen) Shear of Grove City, Ohio. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Anthony Ferguson; and a brother-in-law, Richard Colanere.
Herb retired as a bus driver for Scioto Valley Local Schools after 36 years. After retirement he went to work at Walmart and was known by many as the “Walmart greeter”.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Calvary Baptist Church in Piketon with Pastor Jon Black officiating. Burial will follow in Bailey Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Calvary Baptist Youth Department.
