A Portsmouth-area woman contacted police claiming a funeral home is refusing to release a loved one’s remains until an ongoing payment dispute is resolved.
According to the report, the woman wanted to follow up on a complaint she previously filed involving alleged record issues connected to funeral arrangements.
The caller told police the funeral home was holding the deceased’s remains because of an unpaid bill.
Police reviewed paperwork the woman provided, including funeral service documents issued earlier this month and a signed contract agreeing to pay funeral expenses.
According to the report, updated billing paperwork was later issued under a different family member’s name.
The family claims the funeral home is refusing to proceed until the issue is settled through probate court.
