A volatile argument inside a home escalated quickly when a caller reported a woman grabbing a knife and barricading herself in a bathroom with a child.
According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched after a man reported that a verbal dispute had turned alarming. The caller told dispatch that the woman had made statements about harming herself, grabbed a kitchen knife, and locked herself in a bathroom with her child, then stopped responding.
When deputies arrived, one sergeant was already on scene speaking with the woman while other officers made contact with the male involved. Deputies began questioning the woman about why she had taken a knife into the bathroom with the child. She told officers she only intended to cut toilet paper.
When asked where the knife was, the woman stood up and moved toward it. Deputies immediately ordered her not to touch the knife. She continued moving toward it despite repeated commands, prompting officers to intervene and restrain her hands before she could access the weapon.
The woman was detained and escorted to a patrol vehicle. EMS responded to assess her before transport.
Deputies later confirmed the woman had an active warrant related to a prior domestic violence case. She was taken into custody and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. Court records show she later entered a no contest plea in that case and received a suspended fine.

Deputies say incidents like this highlight how quickly domestic disputes can escalate, especially when children are present. Law enforcement urges anyone witnessing threats of self-harm or unsafe behavior involving weapons to call 911 immediately.
While no injuries were reported in this incident, officers noted the situation could have ended very differently if intervention had been delayed.
