Police officers revived 3 overdose victims in separate incidents and investigated multiple reports of kids in dangerous situations. We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.
Truck Takes Out High Water Signs
A Bonser Avenue caller reported a truck knocked over the high water road closure signs just after midnight. The city replaced the signs about 30 minutes later.
Cry For Help
Police responded to a report of a suicide attempt at 1 am. An ambulance took the victim to the hospital.
Foggy Windows
An officer spotted a vehicle with fogged-up windows parked in Bannon Park at 1:24 am. The guy sleeping in the vehicle said he was staying with friends at Farley Square. However, they got into a fight and he left the residence.
Officer advised him he should not be driving since he didn’t have a valid driver’s license.
Suspicious Activity
Just before 3 am, police spotted a woman walking between vehicles on Washington Street and looking inside them. Officers said she had a box of wires on her that she claimed came from a trash can. The woman gave police permission to search her purse. They found a pair of binoculars and several books. Police gave her a warning.
Under The Influence
Officers and EMS personnel had to revive multiple overdose victims during the course of the day.
- At 4:30 am, police responded to the Royal Inn for a report of an overdose. The woman refused medical treatment and would not open the door for an officer.
- Police responded to Farley Court for a report of a man screaming and slamming himself against a wall at 5:54 am. A sober resident said he’d take care of the guy. Officers were back at the apartment at 7:38 for a possible overdose. The man refused medical treatment.
- It took two doses of Narcan to revive a man who overdosed on 11th Street at 10 am. He refused further medical treatment. Police placed him under arrest on an outstanding warrant.
- Police received a report of an overdosed woman on 20th Street at 9 pm. The caller said the woman was not breathing and had turned blue. The fire department revived her with Narcan. She refused further treatment.
- At 10:34 pm a man overdosed on Court Street. An officer administered a dose of Narcan and EMS workers gave the man two more before he was finally revived. He refused further medical treatment.
Confusing Report
Police responded to a report of a man with a gun attempting to break into a Kendall Avenue apartment at 11:38 am.
After police spoke to multiple witnesses, they determined there was no gun involved. The actual problem was an apparently high man disturbing the police. Police said there were several different disturbances happening at once.
A woman claimed she was hit in the face with a baseball bat. Officers searched the area and checked surveillance video.
Unruly Grandson
Another grandmother called the cops to complain about an unruly grandchild at 3:12 pm. Officers explained to the woman how to contact the juvenile court.
Kids In Danger
A worried relative asked police to do a welfare check on two children at a Wayne Avenue apartment. The caller heard reports of the mother abusing an autistic teen and leaving a toddler in the boy’s car.
Police said the children appeared fine physically but that the house was in terrible condition. The officers notified CPS.
Toddlers In the Street
Just after 6 pm, a Grandview Avenue caller reported two toddlers with no shoes or jackets in the middle of the street with no shoes or jackets.
The kids were inside when police arrived but officers said they would notify CPS about the incident.
Shoplifters Can’t Fool Cashier
Two shoplifters tried to trick a cashier at the Dollar General on Harding. At 7:30 pm, a man and woman tried to hide several items inside a tote. However, the cashier opened the tote when she checked it out.
The pair claimed they didn’t put the items in the tote and did not want them. The cashier noticed the woman’s purse seemed to be stuffed full of items. The woman was also caught on video appearing to put something under her shirt. Police took information for a report.
Men Kick In Door
A woman said two men kicked in her door just after 10 pm on Center Street. They were looking for the woman’s nephew who owed them money.
She threatened to call the police but they seemed unconcerned. They told her they would be back.
