A loose dog turned into a scary evening for a 13-year-old girl who got lost near Mound Park, but Portsmouth police helped get her safely back to family.
Officers were called to Mound Park around 8:30 p.m. after a woman reported that a young teen said she was lost and did not know where to go.
When police arrived, they found the girl at the park with two dogs.
After talking with her, officers learned she had been walking one of the dogs when the other one got loose. The girl chased after the runaway pup and ended up at Mound Park, where she got turned around and could not figure out how to get back home.
Police began checking into where she belonged and located her aunt, who had already been walking around the area looking for her.
The aunt told officers the girl stays with her on weekends and lives in Quincy, Kentucky.
Police said everything appeared fine and normal. No one needed additional services.
In the end, it was not a runaway case or a dangerous situation. It was a kid, a loose dog, and a wrong turn.
Luckily, officers were able to step in, find her family, and turn a frightening night into a safe trip home.
