What You Should Know Before Your First Telehealth Visit

Telehealth has opened a convenient world of medical consultations, allowing patients to consult with doctors from the comfort of their own homes, offering accessibility and ease to patients everywhere.

If you’re preparing for your first virtual visit, having the right knowledge can make the experience smoother and more effective. Here’s what you should know before your first telehealth visit to ensure you get the most out of it.

1. Confirm Your Technology Setup

Before your telehealth appointment, check that you have a stable internet connection, a device with a working camera and microphone, and access to the telehealth platform (app or website). You don’t want technical difficulties interrupting your consultation. Perform a test with a trusted friend if you’re unsure how everything works.

2. Find a Quiet and Private Space

A calm, private setting free from distractions ensures that your medical discussion is uninterrupted and confidential. Choosing a quiet, comfortable space helps both you and your doctor focus on the conversation without interruptions.

Good lighting is also crucial, as your doctor may need to observe any physical symptoms via video, so ensuring the area is well-lit allows for clearer visual assessment and more accurate diagnosis.

3. Understand What Information to Prepare

Be prepared to share a comprehensive and detailed account of your current symptoms, including their onset, frequency, and severity, as well as any recent changes. Have a complete list of your medications, including dosages and the names of any over-the-counter or herbal supplements you are taking.

Be ready to discuss your full medical history, including previous illnesses, surgeries, allergies, and your family’s health background. It’s also helpful to prepare a list of questions or concerns to bring up during your appointment. Being well-prepared allows your doctor to give the most precise advice, diagnosis, and personalized care.

4. Review Your Platform’s Features

Many telehealth platforms allow users to share lab results, upload necessary forms, or enter pre-appointment information through their online portals or apps. It’s helpful to familiarize yourself with these functions ahead of time, such as how to upload documents or where to find the lab result sharing options, so there’s no scrambling during your visit.

5. Know the Limitations of Telehealth

While telehealth offers convenient access to medical care, it doesn’t cover every health issue. Conditions that require a physical exam, such as listening to heart and lung sounds, palpation, or procedures like suturing or imaging, still necessitate in-person visits for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Telehealth is well-suited for routine check-ins, medication management, follow-ups, and discussing test results. It helps reduce travel and exposure, while offering flexible scheduling, making healthcare more accessible.

6. Follow Up Matters More Than You Realize

After your appointment, ensure that you obtain all notes, test orders, and prescriptions discussed, whether written or digital. Include any additional instructions or follow-up steps from the healthcare provider. Telepractice or virtual consultations improve healthcare access and create clear, comprehensive virtual records that can be stored securely and retrieved easily.

This accountability benefits everyone by protecting healthcare providers from legal disputes, ensuring accurate records and building trust between patients and providers. Clear documentation offers a reliable record for future reference, care, and transparency.

With a clear understanding of what to know before your first telehealth visit, you’re ready to approach your consultation with confidence. Telehealth brings accessible, convenient care right to your fingertips, offering a seamless healthcare experience without compromise.
