$562 Grocery Heist Ditched Behind Church

Grocery Heist Left behind church

A man pushing a buggy loaded with groceries from Kroger apparently decided he didn’t want to finish the trip.

Portsmouth police were called to the Gay Street area Tuesday evening after someone reported that a man had pulled a shopping cart full of groceries away from Kroger and ditched it behind a nearby church.

When officers checked the cart, they found about $562 worth of merchandise still inside.

The groceries were returned to Kroger.

The store manager told police they did not want to press charges, since the merchandise had been recovered and the store would be able to recoup at least some of the loss — although some items would have to be thrown away.

Police advised employees to call if the man comes back. And if we’ve learned anything about Kroger shoplifters from the police reports, they always come back.
