PORTSMOUTH, OH — Police searched parts of Portsmouth for a troubled woman with a long history of law enforcement encounters — including being a registered sex offender — after a local rehab facility reported she had made violent threats before leaving the property.
According to the report, staff told officers the woman walked away from the facility wearing sweatpants and a gray sweater while carrying a garbage bag and heading toward the Glover area.
Employees said she allegedly made threats about burning people and shooting them, though no specific victim was named.
⚠️ Why Officers Took the Situation Seriously
Police considered the situation especially concerning because the woman has a significant history with law enforcement and was previously wanted by the State of Ohio for failing to register as a sex offender.
Last year, officers responding to a suspicious person complaint near 11th and Washington Streets located the woman and confirmed she had an active warrant tied to a prior conviction for disseminating harmful material to juveniles.
At the time of that arrest, officers noted she was carrying garbage bags full of clothing while living on the streets. Relatives later retrieved her belongings.
🚓 Officers Search Tracy Park, Argonne Area
After the latest threats were reported, officers checked areas where the woman is known to frequent, including:
- Tracy Park
- Argonne Road
Police eventually located her near Gallia and Young Streets.
According to officers, she appeared okay during the interaction but did not want to return to the rehab facility.
❗ Ongoing Concerns
The case highlights the increasingly difficult situations officers face involving individuals struggling with:
- Mental health crises
- Homelessness
- Addiction recovery
- And repeated law enforcement involvement
Even when concerning statements are made, police often have limited options unless a specific crime occurs or someone is deemed an immediate danger.
For nearby residents and businesses, though, calls involving the woman continue to create concern — especially given her criminal history and repeated police contacts.
