A Greenup County High School athlete has tested positive for COVID. Greenup Superintendent Traysea Moresea announced that the school district was notified over the weekend about the results. The athlete is a member of the Greenup County High School Boys Soccer Team. The district suspended all activity for the soccer team.
Moresea said the health department is now conducting contact tracing. Many Greenup County students are scheduled to return to in-person classes for the first time since March 13 today.
The superintendent posted a reminder online for students yesterday, “It’s the night before we return to school Musketeers! Set those alarm clocks for Grades K, 3, 6, and 9! Buses will roll on schedule. Bring your Chromebooks charged! Share your first-day pics with us in the morning! We are so excited to see you!”
She also reminded students to stay home if they aren’t feeling well. “Communication is key. We want you here safe, healthy, and ready to learn. If you are not feeling well, stay home and contact your school as well as your health care provider.”
Athletes Checked For Symptoms Daily
Morsea said that coaches and athletic trainers check students daily for symptoms of COVID-19 like fever, cough, or loss of taste or smell. She also explained the procedure if a high school athlete tests positive for COVID:
– The coach will contact all student-athletes that may have been in recent contact with the positive case
– Contact tracing will be conducted by the GC Health Department and all student-athletes that may have been exposed will be contacted
– The impacted program will suspend activities for 14 days or until all participants are cleared by the GC Health Department
– The student-athlete will remain under the care of their physician and will not return until they are cleared by the GC Health Department
– This team will be advised to follow the guidelines of the GCHD, which may
include self-isolation or testing
– All athletic facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized in addition to regular cleaning procedures
– Contact tracing will be conducted by the GC Health Department and all student-athletes that may have been exposed will be contacted

– The student-athlete will remain under the care of their physician and will not return until they are cleared by the GC Health Department

Moresea said she shared the diagnosis in the interest of transparency and to highlight the seriousness of COVID. “We send prayers to those impacted and appreciate the continued support for our kids.”
