Are you having one of those weeks when all you can think about is – can the weekend come faster? We get it. With work, family, and everyday chores, it’s no wonder we all fantasize about the weekend, curling up on the sofa, shutting down our brains, and binge-watching a Netflix show all day.
If you’re like us, you know what it’s like to open the home page and spend literal hours browsing through hundreds of titles, then just being irrationally angry that you can’t find anything that hits the spot. We cracked the code: you need a miniseries.
No commitment, just fun for a few hours, and you’re done. So, for this weekend, we’ve made you a list of six Netflix miniseries to save you from endless browsing and help you skip to the good part: keep you glued to the screen.
Ozark
First, a disclaimer. Ozark is not a miniseries, but it’s so worth it that we just had to include it in this list. It has four seasons so far and is very binge-worthy, so it won’t even feel that long.
Everyone’s used to seeing Jason Bateman in a relaxed, feel-good comedy or a nice little family movie. Well, with Ozark, he shows a great range and plays a family man who goes dirty and starts laundering money for a Mexican cartel.
He moves to the Ozark Lakes to get away from it all but, as it happens, gets even deeper into the gutter of mafia and money laundering. He even starts a new casino business. If Marty Byrde, the main character, were someone who could keep themselves away from trouble, then he would probably create an online casino for real money or something similar and live his life far away from the Mexican cartel. Especially because his son, Jonah, was a tech-savvy boy, ready to help his father. Marty’s personality, however, led him to open an actual riverboat casino and continue serving the cartel’s needs, laundering more money for them.
The Queen’s Gambit
Anya Taylor-Joy, chess, and magnificent mid-century fashion. It’s a dream come true. “The Queen’s Gambit” is a seven-episode miniseries that tells the story of a young orphan girl who discovers her exceptional talent for chess. Set in the 1960s, the show deals with addiction, ambition, and obviously, chess. The show itself is visually stunning, with a vintage feel that perfectly captures the period. And the music is awesome, as well as hidden gems here and there!
Unbelievable
Everyone and their mom loves true crime these days. “Unbelievable” is a true-crime miniseries based on the real-life events of a serial rapist who was able to evade capture for years. The show passes the Bechdel test with a great female duo of detectives and the rest is up to you because we don’t want to spoil it.
It’s not an easy watch, but we can promise you won’t be pausing throughout. Well, maybe to get a delivery.
Maniac
“Maniac” is a dark comedy sci-fi. Yep, it can’t get any better. The miniseries follows two strangers who take part in a weird pharmaceutical trial that promises to cure all mental illnesses. Naturally, things go wrong.
The two begin to experience vivid and surreal hallucinations and become strange friends. If you’re looking for a fix of weird, sci-fi, and topics that deal with mental health, look no further.
The Stranger
Adam Price had a normal life until he didn’t. How would you feel to find out your spouse is someone you don’t know? And on top of that, you have a stalker. Some good old suspense and mystery are all you need this weekend and “The Stranger” is going to give you just that. Secrets, lies, dark pasts, and no way to figure it out ahead, it checks all the boxes for a great miniseries if you’re into that kind of TV.
It left us wondering if our family had some dark secrets, like maybe they were in a secret society, have a secret stash of cards somewhere, or were in a teen band we have no clue about. It’s all fun and games until it’s not!
Alias Grace
Do you like true stories? This show is based on the life of Grace Marks, an Irish immigrant convicted of murder in 19th-century Canada. With a concept of flashbacks and interviews, “Alias Grace” goes back and forth, making you feel like a detective yourself until you find the truth at the end.
Another difficult drama to watch, but we promise it’s worth it. With a stellar cast and a story that promises to keep you virtually glued to the screen all weekend, what more do you need to forget about work and everything else for a few hours?
To sum it up, if you’re in the mood for some new miniseries to watch on Netflix, we highly recommend these five because we liked them and we wouldn’t suggest something we think is bad.
