Duane Alan Wales, 59, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, April 29, 2023 at his home. He was born July 13, 1963 in Portsmouth to the late Roger Wales and Sharon (Crabtree) Hart.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepfather, Douglas Hart.
Duane is survived by his son, his pride and joy, Derek Roger Wales. Also surviving are his siblings Danny (Sarah) Wales, Jodi (Andy) Pierron, John Wales, Chrissy (Steven) Phillips, and his step siblings Shane Dunham, Jeri Treadway, Chris Hart, Matt Hart, Tina Dillon, Thea Floyd and Amanda Greb. Other survivors include a special friend, and mother of his son, Michelle Castle. Surviving nephews and nieces are Brad (Nina) Pierron, Brooke (Adam) Hatch, Stevie (Jessica) Phillips, Hannah Wales,Taylor Phillips, and Jessica Phillips. Surviving great-nephew Bryson, great-nieces Kelsie, Kaylee, Emilee, Kinnley, Aliyah and Kinsley. He is also survived by his stepmother, Dianne Wales.
Duane loved fishing and being with his family and friends. He was an avid baseball player, coach, and fan. His baseball career is noted in the Allen County College (Kansas), first ballot Hall of Fame, where he holds many records, to this date.
Duane loved going to watch his son, nieces, and nephews as they played in sporting events. His big heart and personality were known by all. He had countless friends he thought of as family across the country. He was especially thankful for all his wonderful teammates from Allen County Community College in Iola, Kansas. He will be dearly missed, every day, by all of us.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, May 5, 2023 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Burial will follow at Rushtown Cemetery in McDermott. A visitation for friends and family will be on Thursday, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
