Portsmouth Police are investigating a tragic discovery on the banks of the Ohio River on Thursday afternoon. Just after 4 p.m., a Charles Street resident contacted 9-1-1 to report a man knocked on his door and asked him to call the police. The man said he’d found a body on the riverbank.
Officers immediately responded to the scene, and the witness led them to a body that was in the vicinity of the City Garage.
The officer was able to tell right away that the victim was deceased and requested detectives and the coroner.
Due to the location of the body, the assistance of the fire department was required for retrieval, and officers and medics used ATVs to reach the scene.

Police were able to identify the victim with his identification and notified his next of kin. His relative was so upset at the news, that they collapsed and medics were called to the home.
Officers found a tent set up in the weeds near where the body was found and other suspicious items that they impounded as part of the investigation.
The Scioto County Coroner took possession of the victim, and officers interviewed the man who found the body. The matter is still under investigation.
