Guns were turning up all over the county in surprising places, including charity bins, rental cars, and car washes.
Portsmouth Police were called to Goodwill after employees found a loaded gun mixed in with some donated clothes. Officers said the weapon was 22. They impounded the gun and ran checks to see if it was stolen or reportedly involved in a crime.
Deputies responded to a car wash on Galena Pike after an employee reported someone abandoned a white Chevy Cavalier and left it parked in one of the wash bays. The caller also said that there was a gun visible in the back seat.
Enterprise Rent A Car called officers to report someone left a gun in a returned car. Officers impounded the weapon but noted there was nothing on file indicating it was stolen or involved in a crime. They contacted the owner, who came to the station to retrieve it.
Additionally, several of the bay’s spray nozzles were broken.
When officers arrived on the scene, they said the car appeared to be broken down and advised the employee to have it towed at the owner’s expense. The employee wasn’t sure exactly when the spray nozzles were damaged but said they would contact the owner to check.
Officers noted that the weapon in the back seat was a BB Gun.
