A brief scare at Notre Dame Elementary turned out to be a misunderstanding after school staff spotted a man talking to students through the fence and called police out of caution.
School employees grew concerned when the man approached the playground area and began speaking with students. Officers, including the school resource officer, quickly responded to ensure everyone’s safety.
When officers spoke with the man, he explained that he had simply been trying to get the attention of a teacher so he could speak with an adult about arranging a meeting with a priest over a personal matter. Deputies confirmed there was no threat and that the encounter was a misunderstanding. They also contacted the man’s daughter and explained the proper way to make contact.
Following the Rules Keeps Everyone Safe
Police and school officials say situations like this show why it’s so important to follow proper procedures when visiting or contacting schools.
In today’s world, all schools have strict security policies — not just to protect students, but also to prevent confusion and unnecessary panic. Anyone needing to speak with staff or clergy should always:
- Go through the main office first instead of approaching students or classroom areas.
- Call ahead or schedule a visit through school administration.
- Bring valid ID and check in upon arrival.
While this case ended peacefully, officers praised school staff for doing exactly what they should — reporting something that didn’t seem right and ensuring student safety came first.
